SingTel partners with PlayPhone to launch WePlay

Singapore-based telecommunications company Singtel and mobile games publisher PlayPhone have launched WePlay, a mobile gaming platform for Android devices.

According to the TechinAsia.com website, the announcement came just a month-and-a-half after the two companies initially announced their intentions to push out the new game portal.

The firms describe WePlay as an alternative app store that uses consumer analytics to offer certain recommendations that have been tailored to the user’s gaming preferences.

It also features a social gaming aspect to allow players to connect with each another.

WePlay has 150 games available for download at present with a further 150 currently in development.

“Discovery of games is a big problem, and current app stores are not doing it well,” WePlay’s director G. P. Singh said.

The new platform is only currently available to SingTel subscribers, who can download it for free on Google Play. It will also be preinstalled on new Android devices from Singtel.

WePlay is expected to be launched in the Philippines, India, Indonesia and Thailand next year with heavy localisation in each market.

As part of the launch, from December 31 WePlay will give out 500 player credits to the first 100,000 downloads, with each 100 play credits the equivalent of S$1 (€0.58/$0.79)

Unredeemed credits will expire on February 28, 2014.
