Macau experienced gambling revenue growth in 2013
The Chinese gambling resort of Macau posted gambling revenue of $45 billion (€32.8 billion) for 2013, an increase of 18.6% on the previous year.
The Reuters news agency reported that overall growth was boosted by a bumper December in which Macau posted gaming revenue of $4.2 billion, an increase of 18.5% on the previous year thanks to a rise in holiday-season visitors.
In addition, improved access to the region helped increase revenue from China’s middle class, which offset slowdown in the growth of VIP customers following a central government campaign to reduce officials’ conspicuous spending.
Macau now reportedly draws more than seven times the gambling revenue of US casino destination Las Vegas due to its proximity to wealthy Chinese citizens.
